Chapter 10

Trace opened his two-car garage so I wouldn't have to unload my groceries in the rain. He met me at the door leading into the kitchen and unhooked the plastic bag handles that were twisted around my fingers. I walked into his house and as always my eyes were drawn upward by the high vaulted ceilings. The architecture was undeniably stunning and I could tell by the sparkling countertops and stainless steel in the kitchen that housekeeping had been there today. The company he’d chosen used non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning supplies, but used a special natural lemony fragrance to mist the air.

I’d decided to cook my meal at Trace’s house instead of waiting until I returned home. He had gadgets that even I didn’t own. His mother had insisted he have handy gadgets to make cooking at home more convenient and less time consuming. The truth was, she liked having them when she visited. Trace rarely cooked, and when he did, he preferred throwing meat and veggies on his grill.

“When you said you’d gone shopping, I didn’t think you’d cleared out the entire store.” I followed the trails of shopping bags that ran along the back of his sectional couches. He had high ambitions for wanting to wrap everything. Even if he didn’t run out of desire, he’d probably run out of wrapping paper.

I peeked in the bags by my feet. Barbies. Remote control cars. Play-Doh. Wrestling action figures. “Did you leave anything?”

“Some dust,” Trace laughed. “When I think about coming home to an empty house with all of these bedrooms and no one to fill them, I realize how blessed I am. There are children sleeping three to a bed. There are families without beds at all who have to pack up the few belongings they have and lock them up so they’ll still be there when they return at the end of the day. Will these toys take away the pain? No. But it never hurts to know somebody is thinking about you. Somebody cares.”

Trace had a home of this magnitude because he’d purchased it with his future in mind. I knew he longed for the patter of little feet across the hardwood floors early in the mornings. He wanted to cook pancakes with silly faces made of out strawberries and whip cream. He was making a successful climb up his corporate ladder, and was now ready to trade in working long weekends for backyard barbecues with other couples. He knew the honeymoon phase of marriage didn’t last forever, but he was up for the challenge. There would be arguments, but there would be the chance to kiss and make up. Trace wanted what I was scared to have.

Trace opened a bag filled with board games and Go-Fish card sets, then set it back in its place. He continued to rifle through bags until he found one with a princess tiara and wand set. He snapped the plastic tags that held the tiara in place and shook it to fluff the fake pink feathers glued around it.
